This week, Justin Cherot, our Off-Page SEO Team Lead, discusses what led him to our award-winning digital marketing agency and explains why he loves SEO.
When I tell people that I’m an SEO professional, the first question I get is, “What is SEO?”
After explaining to them that I help clients gain visibility on the almighty Google machine, they ask, “Do you like it?”
My answer: “I don’t like it… I love it.”
I love SEO for two reasons. First, as someone who worked in a home improvement “box” store during college, I am a customer-centric person, the type that always used to ask, “What can I help you find today?” Knowing that a trip to one of those places can be overwhelming, I would do everything I could to guide them in the right direction. We used to study customer profiles, which often involved putting ourselves in the customer’s shoes. SEO is no different: I put myself in the user’s shoes and say, “If I were them and I needed help, what query would I type in?” From core and campaign keyword research to SEO content marketing, my goal isn’t necessarily to satisfy Google. If I do? Great. However, my No. 1 priority is helping the user find what he or she needs.
The second reason I love SEO? It’s uber-competitive. They say you can hide a dead body on Page 2, right? Yeah, I don’t want a single client on page two. In fact, if they’re not No. 1 for their desired query—and every single long-tail variation of that query—I lose sleep. If we are No. 1, awesome… now, how can we keep that page relevant enough to stay there?
As the Off-Page SEO Team Lead at Dreamscape Marketing, I take pride in our high client retention rate. We don’t have “clients.” We have “partners.” When they win, we win, and vice versa. I would like to think my love for SEO is an important factor in why our company and partners are so successful.
